A deeply intimate and meditative film, Strong Island asks what one can do when the grief of loss is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence, which can bind a family in an imitation of life, and a nation with a false sense of justice. she exclaims in an interview. | In "Strong Island," Yance Ford, the director, speaks directly to the camera about his brother's murder 20 years ago, and about the resultant shattering of his family. Cinemark When filmmaker Yance Ford investigates the 1992 murder of a young black man, it becomes an achingly personal journey since the victim, 24-year-old William Ford Jr., was the filmmaker's brother. Strong Island is an American 2017 true-crime documentary film directed by Yance Ford. The film centers on the April 1992 murder of Ford's brother William, a 24-year-old African-American teacher in New York, who was killed by Mark P. Reilly, a 19-year-old white chop shop mechanic.
He shows us a photo of his young and happy parents. At one moment, after speaking with the investigator who handled the case back then, Ford breaks down in violent tears. It's heartrending. Yance [uses] the contours of the memoir to finally give his brother the justice that he was denied all those years ago. When you left your neighborhood you went into white territory where the rules were different.
