The International Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta was founded May 1, 1848 at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, by John Templeton McCarty, Samuel Beatty Wilson, James Elliott Jr., Ellis Bailey Gregg, Daniel Webster Crofts, and Naaman Fletcher. In 1853, he met Mary E. Pierson, becoming so interested in her that when she went East to school the next year he followed her. . Neither had ever seen the other before, yet they met in the midst of the trackless west at a time when the entire roll of the "Delta Association" numbered not more than twenty-five. Now, almost 100 years later their vision and passion remains strong. The founders of this brotherhood wanted to include men with distinguished attributes, high ambitions, and a sense of honor.
Just before his scheduled departure, he was stricken ill. Sigma Phi Gamma had five Life Founders who knew that a foundation of friendship, service, and community would bring and keep women together. On the following Founders’ Day, May 1, 1925, FIJI Sires and Sons was organized. I didn’t realize that I would end up feeling at home at one of the chapters.
