I am not in the anthropology field but find many of the natgeo and discovery channel documentaries to be a little too broad and lacking detail/depth. Scientifically accurate, but the authors of the documentary purposely avoided depicting some of the first humans with their real skin colour — e.g., white instead of dark brown — so that viewers would not establish a link between the level of genetic evolution of the first humans and contemporary Africans. It is a 2009 NOVA production, so we would expect quality, and we get it. But that observation notwithstanding, this is an excellent program. This is a straightforward documentary about human evolution and the stages hominids went through to finally become Homo sapiens. I don't think I realized when I bought this, that it contained three interrelated parts to the documentary. The best part of this show is that even for people like myself who try to stay abreast of the rapidly changing scenery of the human tree and how it was pruned to bring us to who we are. But sometimes it’s inspirational, scary, sad, funny or anywhere in between. This wonderful documentary discusses the various early hominids which existed or co-existed from the ancestral home in Africa as they spread throughout the earth, the role of walking upright, the use of opposable thumb, social interaction, climate change and the activities of our forebears which resulted in their eventual elimination because of inability to adapt or being pushed the the extremes and how the billions of us on the earth come from some 600 people who survived in the region of what is now South Africa. They all focus on slightly different parts of the study of human evolution, starting with the oldest hominids and ending with modern humans, neanderthals and homo erectus.
