The storm raced across Wisconsin, Lower Michigan, Ontario, and upstate New York at speeds averaging 65 mph. The population of the town dropped to 145 after the tornado.The supercells eventually formed the line that raced from eastern S.D. However I did set my alarm for about 4:30 just in case, and wow what a lightning show when I got up. The early morning hours of Sunday, May 31, 1998, brought one of the most memorable storm events to Michigan. Storm Team 8 will be tracking storms this summer.

I remember watching the weather on the 11 o’clock news the night before and seeing the line of storms on radar and thinking the Lake Michigan storm shredder will tear it apart. Four people were killed in Michigan and 146 injured.

Eighteen years later you can still identify swaths where most of the trees were blown over (White Lake exit on US 31 – the Spring Lake Cemetery). !We will be talking about that derecho for a long time – and not just every year on its anniversary.

At one point, not a single stoplight was working between Grand Rapids and Baldwin. One of the nation's most destructive and severe straight-line wind events struck Michigan on May 31, 1998. Only two blocks in the entire town were spared significant tornado damage.

The tornado was an EF4 and was the most destructive tornado in the history of the state. That initial blast of wind that hit me wasHey Mr Negative, this is your kind of weekend! It was mid-morning before some of the victims were found. 6 people … to Massachusetts and out into the Atlantic Ocean. A large area of significant wind damage occurred from South Dakota all the way to the East Coast.

By early afternoon the derecho entered Lower Michigan (MI) and turned south-southeast (Figure 2).
